I really like the servo fix your friend come up with. That is a top notch idea.

I will be doing the servo mount. I wish I could do the aluminum servo ear mod but I cannot. I am not a machinist. I wish I was a certified machinist. If I owned a lathe and a mill I would be able to make simple items because I took a bunch of shop classes in tech college and high school using a lathe and mill. Also in order to make that aluminum plate, the plastic servo top has to be mounted in a jig so it can have material removed. If any body would like to start using this idea to modify servos... Please do it, make some money. It will not hurt my feelings at all. Peoples would hafta send the entire servo to whom ever is doing this. I can't even take credit for this idea. Credit goes to a teacher named Steve snook who teaches machine shop in shephardsville Kentucky. He used my servo as a teaching tool in his class.

I have done some measuring....The actual plate captured in between the servo top and body may be able to be made from 3mm Carbon Fiber. But I wonder if the carbon fiber version will be as strong as the aluminium.....

I think it could be done. I've got an extra case I could try it on.

I am in the middle of attempting to cut one out of C.F.

Here is a few pics of this plate. After taking the servo apart and inspecting the piece. I see that It is not as simple as i thought it was. To make more of these they will have to be made of a high grade aluminum and done on a Bridgeport type mill. I attempted to make one from C.F. and a little different, But it will be too thin around the outside to have any real durability. The only way to make more of these is for me too farm it out. And even If somebody got one from me then you need 3mm taken off the servo top. Not everybody has that kind of access to have this done. At that point it would be easier to just replace the servo or get one with an aluminum top.

to remove 3mm off the top would be easy with some sandpaper on a flat surface... and some patience

There is a guy in the vendors section that sells aluminum top cases for 7950 servos also.

Are you going to put the zipper crossing video up here? That was fun to watch.

Have you tried out the alu plate for the 7980 yet??
I would be interested if it work great,, I have high hopes that it will..
On the superlite dlux axels there are only 3 mounting holes for the servo,, so this alu piece will make me feel mutch more happy with the way the servo is mounted..
I really can lock as tight as I want with this,, and another great thing is that it will lift the servo little more up from the axle,,
right now the bottom off my 7980 is sliding over the rocks and that is not okay with me for a servo that cost 200$...
Hope to see some progress here soon,...
Later

I keep one of those case sets in the toolbox, I paid less than $10 for it and you never know when it may come in handy

When the 7980 hit the scene a few years ago, the replacement cases were nowhere to be found. In a comp situation, the last thing you want is a 10$ part failing and messing up your day after you drive halfway across the country to compete.

After modding the servo, I haven't broke it. So i have never needed to Re-check to see if you can obtain a servo top. The alum mod is not a part that can be made by me because i do not have the correct machining tools to recreate more of them. It is nice to know that if a 7980 is broken you can still repair it yourself and not have to send it in to HiTec.

Oh yeah and Floki... I have been using this aluminum plate mod for more than a year now..It works flawlessly. Since adding it to my servo I am very happy with its performance. As rough as i am on my rig i am sure i would have broke it a few times by now.
