Looks like tinypic is back up so here is a pic of the front.
Its just a little too... Square.

And its going to sit much lower. Reason its up so high right now is its sitting up on top of the sliders. I will make new skid plates for the sides that are wider.

Yeah, it's like the tops of the fenders are just a tad too prominent.

Does it really exceed 140 °F in your garage?

hmm... i guess its not quite 140 in my garage. i need a thermometer in there but i would guess it got close to 120. (I've been to Djibouti, Africa so i know HOT.)
and my 3D printed RC Nerds grill has not melted yet so... i guess its not that bad.

yes lines are crisp and material is THICK so there is plenty of room to shape and contour areas for accuracy without losing strength.

still going to recast though

On the subject of PLA melting I thought that Nylon did better withstanding heat, I could be wrong though.

Pretty much everything you can print in has a higher capability of withstanding heat than PLA. There are even some kinds of PLA that have a much higher resistance to temperature but they cost 3-4X the price.

ABS would be a nice material for a body since you can bond it together with the same stuff you would use on styrene.

I keep waiting for ampro to finish his 3d printed interior for the trx4 Broncos but I'm getting impatient. Might get the jk3d dash and seat above to hold me over. At 35 bucks and being from the same place, no compatability issues.

Not sure I mentioned the long bed arrived and he threw in a free long topper for the mix up. Great guy.

I'm having trouble wrapping my tiny underpowered brain on how to recast this thing in resin.
I'm aboit to just go for it and fully prep and paint the 3d pla.

*Also curious if a trx4 Bronco grill would fit, including the light kit...

Just been really busy as I think 2mtech said, too many irons in the fire lol
Andrews Chevy hardbody almost ready for paint, drifters on backburner, kiddo #3 due any day now, and I havent fixed the tie rod I ripped apart 3 times on the fords last adventure under lexan... Oh and my garage is still like 120 degrees. After 10 minutes in there it's torture.

But I really sorta embrace the chaos. Makes me feel alive.

Yeah I dont know either, I've done a few kinds of casting and I really dont have any tips, theres just so many holes and contours. I'm guessing you'd need to split up the parts into separate smaller pieces to be able to get the pieces free of the molds without destroying the molds.


Back to the whole just get a 3D printer idea, maybe if you go that route you could ask to buy access to the files from the guy making it?

Somebody on the jk3drc Facebook page asked about buying the files.

You should have seen how bad that dude got roasted by everyone.

I dont want to be "that guy".

But yeah I looked at the winglet window openings on the doors and tjats when the real headscratching began for the casting process. The body is already in perfect sections, but yes too many openings and such.
The grill is another terrifying thought.
Maybe I could try fitting a traxxas 79 grill and I could skip the casting of that.
Fill holes for rear light buckets with silly putty for the mold master then drill them back out on the resin copies? Hmmm...

Meanwhile... *shrug*
I should at least start stretching the wheelbase to 340ish mm but its still a billion degrees at my bench.
20 minute phases of hot wheel customizing and a couple primer coats on Andrews Chevy is about all I can stand.

Is summer over yet????? Please????

Maybe use the 3D printed body as a master to compare your scratch built styrene version

I'm wondering if you couldn't vacuum form the original body to make a mold, but then you'd still have the challenge of transforming the lexan into resin...

oh yeah my wife's uncle has a place near Raleigh. he was on vacation in Nevada/Arizona so he is fine and his house is ok too. you east coast folks got slammed. hope everyone is okay.

yeah i really am starting to think its not worth the effort to copy this body in resin. its a great idea but i have literally never made a mold to recast anything. so zero experience, no supplies... hmm. i think this one is going to be driven occasionally on light trails, and its time to build a "work rig" for the nasty stuff. more on that later though. this one isn't finished yet but its close.
and as for scratch-built styrene... yes I've seen headquake and others do some incredible stuff but that's literally like driving art around on the dirt. and mine would be some abstract Picasso looking art haha yoda would say "one cabwall a styrene master does not make." lol

yeah. i think im just going to build up this 3d printed body as is. welcome to phase 2: the YOLO phase.
(oh wow that gives me a great idea for the next build hahaha the only nugget you get for now: "i love what you do for me, TOYOLO!")

We were more fortunate than a lot of people...watched everything go to hell all around us while all we had was 20 hours on the generator.
