Build shock mounts and run cg low at mid stroke with 148s

Good to see some difrent options here

I run 103mm Gmade piggies with the CKRC lowering kit. I tried it with the lower link mounts flipped but it was just a little too low. Right now it's perfect. I mostly run high speed TTC stuff but all I have to do to crawl is disconnect the sway bars and I'm off.
Thanks for the information. Do you run a locked front diff?

im running 1/8 scale bugg front shocks on all four corners of my wraith. when im crawling i have about 80% droop and my cg is very low and shes very flexi.

i also go fast, when im set up for speed the droop is about 50% with added spring load. normaly this would raise ride height.

on my rear shock tower the upper hole is where i put the shocks when its set up for speed and it keeps this same ride height

I was thinking of doing this on my next build since I have a bunch of old (brand new) Ofna 1/8 shocks floating around that I used to use on my T-Maxx. They are pretty cheap so I bought a bunch of them.

they work pretty good. i did have to do some custom valving and cut a few links out of the springs to get them to move at low speeds.

i drilled the larger ports. the idea behind this is at slow speed oil easily passes through the large ports then at high speed like a jump landing the oil is slowed through the small ports.

the large ports made a huge difrence for slow speed crawling.

I got a set of the venom shocks too. I like the way they look minus the red springs. But they did not come with shock oil in them. They seem to still dampen with just the air in them? They only have 2 small holes in the for the air to pass through. Does anybody run just air. Also will shock oil provide more dampening than air or less. I know it will depend on the weight of the oil.

id have to guess that shock oil would dampen more then air. i also think that a oil shock designed for oil wihtout its oil probly is only damping with the spings. shocks internals are pretty much doing nothing

im runing 30wt oil but it would be nice to try 20wt.

They seemed about the same. They still dampen all the spring does is Help spread it apart

Fill them with oil.
I found the supplied springs way too stiff. I threw Losi 1.4 and 1.6 rate springs on them and let em droop. Crawls great.

Do you think the holes in the pistons need to be a little bigger?

I don't have any shock oil that's for shocks but I do have 1:1 oils and lubricants. Can you recommend anything in that field. Is 30wt motor oil the same as 30wt shock oil?

No, not the same.
Just get a $4 bottle of 20wt shock oil. It'll be great.

can we get a picture of the shock vavleing. is there 3 or 6 ports maybe 5.

modifying shock vavleing is all up to you. it took me a few hours to get my vavles how i liked them.

i think id fill them with the 20wt oil and see how you like them and go from there if to soft you could try 30wt. if the shocks respond to slow then give them alittle spring preload. heavier oil flows through the ports slower so this will creat a slower shock action and firmer feel.

then man ride heitgh comes into play to. do all the tuning to hopefully end up at your target ride height

ive got a few evenings worth of hours into just suspension tuning

can do alot before vavleing is needed. with my buggy shocks i messed oil and springs first then vavleing as a last resort.

It's a 2 port valve and the holes are pretty small. I will try to get a picture for you. The reason I asked about air alone is because they did offer resistance.

Sometimes there are burrs on the valves or inside the shock body that drags.

You could easily ad two ports the same size

A closer look to my shocks and a quick disassemble and I found that that the resistance/dampening was coming from the o-ring on the bottom of the shock. It was pretty snug around the shaft. I am going to try a smaller id o-ring to see if this helps.

They will just wear out. The original silicone o-rings don't have much resistance once they have oil on them.

I just installed a set of Traxxas XX-Long Big Bores. Swapped in the 3-hole pistons and put my Axial purple springs on them. They are really smooth, very easy to bleed and cycle perfectly. I'm really impressed.
