I simply couldn't believe how much better the low end resolution was and how much better performing it is, as well as more controllable overall....unreal!

Maybe this is a good system for something like a Yeti or Rock Rey or even a Bomber?

Something that doesn't need the insanely slow low speed of a dedicated crawler and could benefit from the consistent wheel speed technology. Plus it's priced ok for a motor/ESC and is waterproof.

The fastest motor is 2300kv and 3s only, it's priced higher than a Mamba X combo which has the remote drag brake option that is insanely useful for rock racers like the bomber.

The XeRun AXE is a slow crawler only system that happened to fail it's big entrance on the market.
They need to go back to the drawing board and make a version 2.0 pretty fast if they want to keep that kind of price range.

Yea i dont know what they did there for price but amain hobbies has $10 off when u spend over $150 and that mamba x with the slate crawler motors is 199.99 soooo lol how is it worth more the slate goes from 1900kv to 3800kv. I have the 2850 and the 3800 and run them on 3s and theyre good for up to 4s for the motors

I heard there is already some updates on the system.
John are you going to revisit the review if anything major has changed?

Facebook group
Someone bought the AXE system for a bomber and i had a discussion with him. He said there was an update released.

2300kv on 3s is slow for the bomber, maybe he thought it would handle 4s...

Real life rock crawlers use gas engine, the throttle can only control the amount of air going into the engine. This means, at any given RPM, varying the throttle merely controls the torque. For an on-road car, this throttle response gives the driver a 'linear' feeling. Worth noting here, if you keep a constant torque, the car will want to accelerate at a steady rate until it reaches maximum designed speed.

RC ESCs, in my limited understanding merely uses a voltage control. This means if you give the ESC a 10% throttle, it will want to instantly 'rush' to 10% Max RPM. Of course, change of speed does not happen in a spilt of a second, it has to take time to slowly ramp up the RPM. It is such a poor design, because the motor amp will surge to ~ 100A ( or even higher if you pay premium to get good lipo) before the car accelerates to the desired RPM ( that is, 10% of maximum RPM). The only ESC I know that can have similar 'linear' feeling is the castle mamba/sidewinder ESC, but you have to set up 'torque limit'. However, the RC ESC cannot really control the RPM, when the load increases, the RPM will reduce, and motor current will increase, thus torque will increase.

Depending on the purpose of driving, we are merely programming the car to behave in a way consistent with the driver's expectation. Torque control gives linear feeling and fit better with on-road racing. RPM control means the motor will try its best to stick to a given RPM, therefore, the motor current will vary depending on the load. Crawlers get best traction when the tire slightly lose the grip (10% slip rate), therefore RPM control is ideal. You can google lexus SUVs has some crawl control feature. Some Land Rover also has downhill assist, which is simply an RPM control (a constant wheel speed) when the car goes downhill. The bottom line is, for crawler, RPM control is the ideal solution.

With all that being said, the biggest advantage of this AXE system seems to be its ability to fixate to a certain RPM. I think what matters is how the car crawls. I think AXE system is a big stepforward

imo the way we've been doing it for years is the closest to a ice powered full-size vehicle we can get. this axe system to me looks like using cruise control.

It indeed is a super-low-speed-cruise-control

Saw that too. IMO though hobbywing could have KILLED with this product if it was priced at 175$. At 250$ its a joke.

Why ? I’m looking and seeing the competition, Holmes BLE and a Puller Pro 2200

Or is it because with the HobbyWing name it should be much cheaper than the competition ?

Might do better in the european markets.

Over here in the UK...

Over here the Hobbywing AXE is $258.81
And a Castle Mamba X / Slate Combo is $310.44

It's worse than mamba X and puller pro BY FAR.
The puller pro is on another level of build quality and performance.

If you want a fair comparison, you have look at the Mamba X and slate motor combo which is much cheaper than hobbywing.

This is what I meant by my statement. Its nowhere near comparable to a HH motor.
