Couple of interesting shots. The IFS has a sway on the rear. No sway on the rear of the SA rig.

Both are running the same springs on the shocks, but the IFS has stiffer pre-load springs.

More tire tread on the ground. That's normal with IFS suspension, but there's no big loss of center clearance like people think you'd have.

Different tires on for now, but here's a couple of clearance shots. SA rig should get new tires tomorrow. So I'll get another measurement with the larger tires.

4 3/4"

5 1/4"

Got RusT's rig wrapped up today. DTP came over and worked on wiring for his lights.

I decided to tackle an idea that's been floating in my head since DTP came back with his RC4WD goodie bag from Oregon.

I'm running a 4PKS and have a ton of equipment in the rig. Front and rear steering, five light bars, two BECs, the RX8, 3Racing light unit, C.L.A.W V2 winch, and the micro servo in Stig's head.

With front and rear steer, throttle, and winch all four channels on the 4PKS were populated. And I was happy.

Until I got to drive RC4WD's AX2 transmission.

So, to clear up a channel to shift the transmission I decided to put RC4WD's wireless winch controller to use.

Pics tell the story.

The circuit board of the RC4WD handheld control unit. I soldered some wire to the two switches so I can make a 5PKS.

Gutted the winch controller board, heat-shrinked it, and made an adapter to plug my C.L.A.W. into the RC4WD board at the white plug. The controller board is powered by a Castle Creations BEC set to 7.2V. That BEC is powered off the Thunder Power 850mAh 3-cell Li-Po.

Then it was time to rip the 4PKS apart.

Started wire routing through the radio.

The RC4WD transmitter board is housed in the empty pocket inside the 4PKS.

Wires exit with the factory 4PKS bundle. I'll pick up pushbutton microswitches tomorrow and mount/wire them in.

The system works great and once I get the switches installed in the transmitter I won't have to fumble with carrying an additional unit to operate the winch.

So there's a simple 5PKS. Enjoy.
Finished this.

Cut down some tact switches. Got these at Radio Shack. They're momentary push-buttons that get used in garage door openers and such.

Chose mounting locations and drilled holes through the drop-down wheel adapter for each switch.

Soldered in a set of Dean's 4R plugs. Soldered the wires to the "wrong" side of the male plug, but it works either way. The only difference is the location of the raised tab on the plug.

Buttons are in easy thumb reach. No fumbling about trying to hit switches near the wheel, no need to hold a key-fob transmitter for the winch.

What's great about the RC4WD wireless winch controller is that it operates like a 1:1 winch controller. It will only spool/unspool line when you press the button. I prefer this over the 3rd or 4th channel functions on RC controllers that don't give a momentary action when you press the button. Instead it latches and spools line until you hit the other button - and you'd better hope you don't accidentally hit one of those winch buttons unexpectedly.

With the RC4WD controller this isn't a problem.

Thanks.

The trick is that the RC4WD system is paired to one another. You will only be able to control one winch controller with one transmitter. Of course you can move the controller board from rig to rig if necessary, but since I needed five channels on this build, this setup was the ideal solution.

$40 for a winch channel that operates the way a winch should isn't bad.

Its the only thing I hate about the futaba, I can't get that press on, release off action for the winch.

Plus you just freed up another channel for other stuff.

I'd assume I could adapt that wireless controller to a servo winch right?

Yes, just wire the two output wires directly to the servo's motor.

Ordered some aluminum GPM Exo front arms for this the other day. Today they arrived.

Fit and finish is good. They use nylon inserts where the hinge pins pass through the arms so there's no metal on metal.

We're waiting on RPM arms too.

Slash slipper on an AX2 with 60/12 gearing.

I ran my servo winch like this.

I ran my steering servo to one side of the switch. Then the winch to the other side. So with a flip of the switch I got steering and another flip I got winch all on one channel.

I could have done that but the functions on the 4PKS are all latching. It's either on or off.

I much prefer having the winch operate only when I'm pressing the button. That's the way full size winches work - no reason they shouldn't work like that on a small scale.

And all of my control is at the radio. No need to flip switches on the vehicle and activate the winch when something else should function.

I hear ya....The only reason I went this route was all my other radios were spoken for and there's no power to it until I flip the switch. Then when I turn right it spools out and then turn left and it winches in.The down side is the steering and winch don't work at the same time.

Yeah, I just saw this and had to try it. I only have one radio so this setup was a perfect solution for what I needed.
