....... I played around with trying to get the ideal "winch line tube guide" in order for quite a while. This is the smoothest bends and best routing I could come up with and still have it exit center. I brazed it onto my "tunnel ram spool guide" and also incorporated it into the front chassis rod. it goes right over the servo. You can see that I got everything fitting pretty good all under the hood.. I even stuck the shift servo under the driver fender because I should be able to run an AX2 2spd trans with this same setup. I originally designed it around that transmission and then switched to the supershafty recently. I'm going to cut off the excess tube after I fit the hood around it. The goal is to have a hole in the grill & have the hood slide back over the tube that is protruding and that will hold the front of the hood from flopping around and I can fasten the sides of the hood to my tabs. Then, out of the tube it will run either to a fairlead on my bumper or.... something. I'm excited about todays accomplishments and even more excited to sit down & relax for the rest of the evening. Thanks for looking! Last edited by Die-Laughing; 07-13-2013 at 07:09 PM. |

That's a lot of gear in such a tight space. I'm impressed...and more glad it wasn't me having to figure it out! |

Looking great - the front layout seems as if it was CAD designed to fit... Question - Why did you face your CMS servo forward instead of down? |

I was wondering about that as well with the forward mounted servo. I had Lue weld everything to tight specs, just wide enough to do two servos side by side, steering and winch. But I have to say the servo routing and setup to spool is simply bad ass!!!!! I think you should leave the "stinger" on there and not cut it....that way you can probe people out of the way that might be holding up your all business purpose built rig. Great work brotha. |

I was more worried about my transmission fitting in there perfectly at the time I made the steering servo mounts. A few good things about where I mounted it are, the panhard bar tucks up into the space under the servo when at full compression, wouldn't have that with the servo pointing down, also. I was able to run the winch line tube over the top of it. If the servo splines were pointing down with the long side of the servo body parallel to the front bar, that wouldn't have worked out like that. If the servo splines were pointing down with the long side of the servo body perpendicular to the front bar, it would be into the transmission. Edit: actually, it does look like I could put the steering servo on the passenger side with the splines pointing down and the servo body perpendicular to the front bar. Hmm. Well, its probably too late for that because I have my steering & panhard setup figured out already. Meh Last edited by Die-Laughing; 07-14-2013 at 08:19 AM. | |

I have always wondered the same.... I think they both have small perks and cons. But space comes first and I doubt most people see issue with either setup.

Only con I've notice with it laying down spline fwd is as you turn it the angle your drag link is on changes. It doesn't stay parallel with the panhard bar. With the splines down you don't have to worry about the geometry changing when you turn.

Good point Travis. I probably would have done it that way had I thought of that. Meh. Well, my rig grew a bumper today! I'm stoked! I wanted to keep it similar to the 1:1 rig this one loosely depicts.. It still needs a little clean up work but, you'll get the idea.. As you can see, I made a cool little circular winch line guide.. I guess that would be considered my fairlead, no? ....... |

...... I made some mount tabs for the light and clearanced underneath it a little bit to allow rotation if needed. I shortened my winch line guide tube to end right at the front of the grill.. I modified the grill to slide over the winch line guide tube as well as the two upper bumper supports. once installed, you can't even tell.. turned out great IMO. overall top view.. The bumper is solid 3/16" stainless and all the joints we're tack welded, ground down and then brazed. I think I might need somewhere to hook my winch hook to... The epicness continues. Good move on reworking the rear uppers. Not as clean as yours but here is how I did mine on the SCX-Exo the other day. Function over form in my case! Szczerba's SCX-EXO ... |
